Progress update - 13th October

Wow, well into Autumn now and it seems like a long time since we worked on May. The September steam gala fell on Sygnets' weekend, and the Sygnets were therefore busy on other tasks that month.

However the weekend of 13th October saw a busy time on May with some useful progress being made. Firstly, the entire cab front was stripped back to bare metal, treated with Ferricon, and painted with primer. This will prevent any further rusting over the winter and once the welding to the cab roof is complete it means most of the cab will very quickly progress to first undercoat, then topcoats.
We also (between six of us) lifted the bonnet cover and handrails off, allowing us access to the underside of the bonnet for the first time. After a bit of a struggle two of the nuts securing the handrails were freed, so one of the three bonnet sheeting sections is now completely freed, and hopefully the remaining nuts will come loose a little easier. With the sheeting off we were also able to clean up and ferricon the top surfaces of both the fuel tank and water tank before replacing the sheeting to keep the weather out over the coming months.

With the cab front now in primer and the bonnet sheeting under tarpaulin, the only blue remaining is the exhaust water cylinder and a small section at the top of the cab rear. No longer "the little blue engine"...  but that of course begs the question of eventual livery!
