Progress update - 24th August

posted 27 Aug 2012, 09:10 by Derek Pattenson
Thanks to the Sygnets who helped out on 11th August, with the surprisingly difficult job of undercoating all the l/h frame and underside of the footplate. This is an awkward job, with so many different surfaces to paint, pipes to get behind, bolt heads to get around and so on, so I think we all ended up bruised to a greater or lesser degree. Nonetheless by the end of the day all (visible) parts were into grey undercoat - and most of the hidden areas too.

Finally returned the (almost) completed l/h cab door to the loco today. Remaining tasks on the door are to refit the external handle, put a thin panel over the internal side of the winding mechanism, and source and fit the window winder handle. Like the r/h door, this one's not yet operational, since the channel for it to slide in is not yet obtained and fitted, so the door's just resting on some wooden spacers at present. The door's to be left in it's open position for now, otherwise we'll never get back in the cab!

The same work day also saw some small areas in Ferricon go into primer - the remaining section underneath the l/h footplate, a couple of crankcase covers, the "conical" section of the exhaust. We're running out of jobs to do on the l/h side until we can get into the workshop to repair the roof and prepare the replacement bonnet covers. Main tasks in the meantime will be either in the cab or on the engine itself.

Lastly, a picture of the recovered clutch assembly and clutch plate, awaiting attention at Swanage...
