Update - 13th May 2012

posted 16 May 2012, 12:45 by Derek Pattenson
Class 27 D5401 runs past May at the Diesel Gala Diesel Gala weekend, so naturally the weather was (finally) fantastic, allowing some serious stripping and painting progress to be made. Over the course of Friday and Saturday, with the help of Sygnets and leaders alike, we completed stripping and wire-brushing (all but one short section) the underside of the left-hand footplate, including the vacuum pipe run. This is a truly horrible job, working pretty-much upside down in a very confined space, with lumps and bumps causing bruising and scrapes all over. Still, it got done, and Ferricon'd, and primed; together with the one "fixed" section of bonnet side (behind the exhaust) plus various fittings and pipework of the exhaust itself.

Next sections to be so treated will be that short remaining bit under the footplate, then the exhaust itself. In the meantime work continues on the left-hand cab door, whilst arrangements are also being made for the collection of the replacement clutch, and ordering the steel for the cab roof, steps and bonnet top.

See "The view from the cab" for some more shots including May...
