Update - 14th January 2012

First update of the New Year, on a day when despite the railway's "winter shutdown" services at Norden are as frequent as ever, with the DMU shuttle to Corfe Castle giving us some moving scenery to watch. With the valuable assistance of two Sygnets, we got two very useful jobs done: firstly, (temporarily) fitting the refurbished right-hand door so that it actually operates now, and secondly refitting the left-hand cab steps in place. This now provides us with a much more convenient access to the cab, whilst being a further step to weather proofing. Both these jobs are "temporary"; when the loco is moved to Swanage for welding work, the door will come out again and the steps will be removed for repairs, but both should return fairly swiftly after that work.
Also done at the weekend was some cleaning and ferricon'ing under the right-hand footplate; specifically the r/h ends of the front and rear re-rerailers, the coupling rod, and the "vertical" arm of the brake linkages. We're missing the tension spring that pulls the brakes off when not applied, and in anticipation of it being a tough challenge to find a tension spring of exactly the right dimensions, we've measured up for an adjustable caliper to attach to the main vertical link, allowing for some flexibility in spring length/tension.
Interior of cab, showing door fully closed at last!      Brake linkage, with missing release spring highlighted

Right hand side of loco - lots more work to do!
