Update - 18th April 2013

posted 18 Apr 2013, 07:03 by Derek Pattenson
Five weeks since the last update, and quite a lot of progress in a number of areas to report. Firstly, the brake linkages are finally all freed up and releasing the handbrake now allows the brake blocks to swing freely back clear of the wheels, whilst application results in a firm braking force being applied. A small but important step forward!

The engine itself is now fully disassembled - in fact that's not quite true, re-assembly has commenced with some of the cylinder heads now being complete with valve and spring assemblies. The injectors are away for overhaul at a specialist company, whilst other components are being cleaned and prepared. On the loco the radiator fan cowling has been removed, cleaned and painted The fan cowling, one half rubbed down and ready for ferricon(there are some patch repairs to complete) whilst the top block of the
radiator has been unbolted ready for removal and radiator washout. Cab steps are prepared for cutting and welding in replacement sections, which have themselves been prepared.

Offsite, two replica nameplates have been fabricated (so the original can be held in safe keeping) and join the two existing resin replica worksplates. Physically complete, we hope to complete the painting of these ready for diesel gala weekend in May.

Also progressing off-site is the overhaul of the four "dashboard" gauges (vacuum, air pressure, oil pressure and water temperature). The housings for these are cleaned and polished, and the dials are being recreated as electronic PDF documents that will be printed onto vinyl as replacement faces for the dials.

Last weekend (Sygnets' working day) we got lots of items painted into primer, from which point progression to undercoat should be straightforward. Various other parts also got cleaned up and prepared. The water-filled exhaust and chimney pipe above it have been rubbed-down and put into primer too, so there's now very little blue paint remaining anywhere!
